Write four paragraphs defining the term 'bodystorming'. (4 paragraphs)
Bodystorming involves interacting with the prototype or object you plan to design. Bodystorming is meant to allow users to interact and get a feel for the design they wish to create. It allows them to expand on ideas and gives them an idea of how it would actually work in the real world. Using Bodystorming designers can understand the potential connections between users and the prototype and the way it fits along with the environment, social setting, within the aspect of technology and whether or not users would benefit from it. Additionally, individuals can brainstorm while engaging with the prototype about more features that can perfect the prototype. Bodystorming is a highly creative way to develop and enhance ideas regarding a certain issue or object. Putting yourself in the situation will help you realize the major flaws or aspects that might have been overlooked in the initial design process. Testing the prototype is best done through bodystorming because it allows designers to put the prototype through as series of tests and interactions in order to determine whether or not it is capable of handling certain scenarios. Furthermore, bodystorming is the most productive way to generate ideas that will better provide designers with insight regarding their prototype. Consequently they will also be able to determine which target group and environment best suits their design.
Describe an issue that you would like to use bodystorming to research, analyze and investigate, and describe how you would develop a Case Theatre scenario to do so. (6 paragraphs)
An issue I would like it investigate would be homelessness after a natural disaster. Using bodystorming techniques I would put myself in a similar scenario so that I can understand the essential needs of people after such a tragedy. Using this technique I would further evaluate proposed designs to determine the effectiveness of their use and the whether or not it would be valuable to people in such circumstances. Because such experiences are highly catastrophic and affect vast amounts of people I would seek to identify similarities all people face within those situations and create a design addressing those issues to further benefit them. For such designs as portable and temporary houses I would seek to situate and interact with the design through bodystorming in order to see if such a design would in fact be suitable, sustainable, and efficient. Experiencing this through bodystorming would allow me as an individual to see through the eyes of those suffering in such situations, giving me a better perspective and understanding. After gaining vital understanding of what people may deal with, I will be able to create a better design with the situation and those people in mind. This will effectively create a more suitable prototype and thus a more concrete solution to the initial problem. Bodystorming will not only allow users to interact with the prototype but will produce supplementary ideas for future enhancements as time progresses and technology further develops.
Effective bodystorming will create an array of possibilities that will not be limited to the design but will continue to develop even the smallest aspects of a design. Overall I find this technique to be greatly useful and something each designer should endure so that they may fully understand their prototype and the environment they are introducing it too.
